Why are embroidery scissors are shaped like storks? The earliest form of bird shaped stork scissors were actually clamps used by midwives in the 19th century to stop blood flow in a newborn's umbilical cord. Due to the longtime association of storks and babies, these clamps were shaped like storks. Midwives often stored their medical tools alongside their sewing and embroidery kits. Somewhere along the years tools got mixed, the clamps changed in shape and size and morphed into stork embroidery scissors.
